Bill HeiseThe founder of Heise Metal Sculpture, Bill Heise studied art and art education at Buffalo State College. After moving to rural Vermont and teaching briefly, Bill began sculpting with found metal in 1966, tapping into Vermont's rich farming past and wide array of raw materials. He and his wife Carol, who contributes to design and production, and manages the financial and marketing functions of Heise Metal Sculpture, attend numerous art shows throughout the United States, including ACC-Baltimore, Bruce Museum of Art, Guilford Expo and the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts. Bill has received many awards and participated in numerous one-man shows throughout his career. His most recent works are born from impressions and inspirations gathered on trips to the Southwest and Honduras--the spiritkeepers and tribal masks are a departure from the more representational animal sculpture of the past. Additionally, Bill has recently applied his artistry to functional pieces--unique glass-crested tables crafted from intricate assortments of recycled and salvaged metal.
Chad Heise Intrigued by his uncle's alchemy while growing up, Chad Heise has brought Bill's craft to the San Francisco Bay Area. A musician living in San Francisco since 1994, Chad had often envisioned a west coast annex of Heise Metal Sculpture so as to introduce more people to Bill's work. Finally, in 2002, Chad returned home to Vermont for an extensive apprenticeship with Bill at the Burlington studio. After a drive across the country with a truckload of sculptures (and numerous stops at various farms and scrapyards along the way) Chad has continued to craft pieces in the Heise Metal Sculpture tradition. By extracting raw materials from local shipyards and scrapyards, Chad has been able to add a Bay Area-oriented maritime and urban-industrial imprint to the work. Working from his studio in the historic Melting Point Studios (the former Hamm's Brewery), Chad has exhibited at many local galleries and boutiques, as well as numerous art shows throughout California, including the Contemporary Crafts Market, Los Altos Rotary Art Show, the Union Street Festival, Malibu Fine Arts Fair, and Tapestry Arts Festival.
